The Pitwright app

What it does

Most barbecue advice leaves the timing to feel. Pitwright starts from the one thing you actually know, when dinner is, and works backward: when to light the fire, when the meat goes on, when to expect the wrap, and how long to rest. You log temperature readings as you cook, and the app tracks each cut through its stages, builds the curve, and holds the whole record after.

It covers 15 classic smoker cuts. The free tools and Learn guides on this site use the same cook data as the app, so the numbers agree.

Free, offline, no account

Pitwright is free to use. Core cooking features do not require an account, and there is nothing to sign up for. It works offline once loaded, so a weak signal at the pit does not stop a cook.

Your cook records, settings, custom rubs, active session, and photos are stored on your own device, not on a server. Pitwright cannot see your cooks. Export everything to a single file from Settings whenever you want a backup you control, and import it to restore the record. There is no cloud sync, so keep an export before switching devices or clearing browser data.

Backward cook planner

Enter the cut, the weight, your smoker type, and the serving time. Pitwright plans the cook backward from dinner and gives you the fire-lighting time, the meat-on time, the wrap window, and the rest, with the schedule laid out so you know what happens next and when.

Cook log and alarms

During a cook you log temperature readings and short field notes. Pitwright tracks the cut through its stages, draws the temperature curve, and can alarm you at the targets you set. Alarms fire while the app is open, based on what you log; keep Pitwright open and the device awake for the best chance of catching one.

The Pit Record

Every finished cook lands in your Pit Record: the curve, the timings, the wood and pit temperature, what worked, and what to change next time. It is the accumulated log of your own cooks, on your device, that turns one good brisket into a repeatable one. Photos of the cook attach to the record and stay on your device with it.

Reference at the pit

Pitwright doubles as a troubleshooting reference for mid-cook questions: what temperature a cut is done at, how long it should take, when to wrap, when to pull, and what to do when the stall drags on. The same guidance is written up in the Learn library, and the printable Command Packs put one cut's whole playbook on a page you can set next to the pit.

How to install it

Pitwright runs in any modern browser, and you can install it so it opens from your home screen or desktop like a normal app:

• Android: open Pitwright in Chrome and choose Add to Home Screen.
• iPhone and iPad: open Pitwright in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
• Desktop: open Pitwright in Chrome or Edge and use the install icon in the address bar.

A native Android version is in closed testing and is not yet on the Google Play Store. Until it is public, the installable web app above is the way to run Pitwright on Android.
